I’ll be honest with you. When someone first asked me if I wanted to test the Volvik Vivid Twilight golf balls, my immediate thought was: total gimmick.
Glow in the dark golf balls? I already knew what those usually are — glorified rocks with a novelty paint job. And beyond that, I’m just not out playing golf in the middle of the night. So these sat in my office for the better part of two months collecting dust while I convinced myself I’d never actually have a reason to crack them open.
Until I had two reasons.
And now I’m writing a review I genuinely did not expect to write.
What Are Volvik Vivid Twilight Golf Balls?

Before we get into it, let’s set expectations. The Vivid Twilight isn’t trying to be a Pro V1. It’s built on Volvik’s Vivid platform — a three-piece construction with a high-energy core, a responsive mid-layer, and a soft ionomer cover — and it features UV-reactive pigments that charge up under a UV flashlight and glow for up to 15 minutes per charge.

They come in matte orange or yellow, they’re fully USGA-conforming, and they use Volvik’s patented 322 dimple pattern for consistent flight.
The key distinction from every other glow ball you’ve seen at a tourist trap mini golf shop? These are designed to actually perform like a real golf ball. And spoiler: they do.
First Impressions: Batteries Not Included
The Starter Pack comes with two sleeves of balls (6 total) and a UV flashlight. I didn’t open the box until I was ready to use them, which turned out to be a mistake.
The flashlight needs 3 AAA batteries, and they are not included. I get it, it’s a cost thing, but it’s a bit of a buzzkill when you’re standing there ready to go, and you’re suddenly raiding TV remotes for batteries (this actually happened). All that to say, make sure you order some beforehand.
Once we sorted that out? We were in business.

Use Case #1: Novelty Night Golf (And It’s More Fun Than You Think)
This Spring Break, my family was staying right on the 5th green at the Resort Course at Eagle Crest in Oregon. Perfect setup to finally put these to the test.
A few evenings in, we snuck outside with the Twilight balls, a UV flashlight, and absolutely zero serious golf intentions — and had a genuinely great time. We hit wedge shots and watched them tower up into a pitch-black sky. We made prop bets. We rolled putts. My niece, my nephews, my daughter — everyone was into it.
The glow itself was brighter than I expected.
A few seconds under the UV light and the balls lit up noticeably. Hold the light on them longer, and they get brighter and last longer — the advertised 15-minute window held up pretty accurately in my experience. On a nearly pitch-black course, you could see these things clearly even 15 minutes after their last charge. But I found myself charging them every 5 minutes or so for maximum effect.
Is this golf? Not really. But is it a genuinely fun thing to do on a family vacation when you happen to have access to a green after dark? Absolutely yes. For that use case alone, having a pack of these in your bag feels like a no-brainer.
Use Case #2: Twilight Golf (This Is the Real One)
Here’s where it gets interesting for the actual golfers reading this.
Let’s be real — most of us are not going out at midnight to play 18 holes in the dark. But twilight golf? That’s a different story entirely.
You know the deal. Rates drop 60–70% at 4 or 5pm, you tee it up, and you try to squeeze in as many holes as daylight allows. Well, what if daylight wasn’t the limiting factor anymore?
That’s the pitch here. With these balls, as the light fades, you don’t have to stop. You can legitimately add holes to your twilight round because you can actually see the ball.
Is it as good as playing in daylight? No. But finishing 14 holes of normal golf and then playing 4 more in near-darkness, after a couple beers, with balls that actually glow? That makes for a memorable round.
The golf course absolutely did not see you coming.
Performance: It’s a Real Golf Ball…
Ok, so here’s the part where I was genuinely surprised.
These play like a legitimate mid-tier golf ball. Off the club they felt exceptionally soft — more so than I expected. Ball flight was pretty straight with a low-spin profile off the tee, and around the greens, I actually noticed more spin than I anticipated. They’re not tour balls, and they’re not trying to be. But they felt like real golf balls, and that matters.
If you wanted to, you could tee these up for a full, legitimate round and not feel like you were at a disadvantage. The construction is solid and the matte coating gives them a soft feel that holds up through the bag.
In the daylight, they look just like other Volvik Vivid balls.
Who Should Buy These?
These aren’t for everyone, but they’re for more people than you’d think.
If you ever play twilight rates, these belong in your bag. If you go on family golf trips or stay somewhere with course access in the evenings, these belong in your bag. If you’ve got kids who would love to putt around after dark on vacation, or in the backyard at home, these definitely belong in your bag.
They caught me completely off guard. I went in skeptical, and I came out genuinely impressed — not because they reinvented the golf ball, but because they delivered exactly what they promised and made two experiences possible that otherwise wouldn’t have happened.
Pricing & the Breaking Eighty Deal
Here’s how the pricing breaks down:
- Starter Pack (6 balls + UV flashlight): $32.97
- Refill Pack (6 balls, no flashlight): $24.99
And for Breaking Eighty readers, you can grab 1 Starter Pack + 2 Refill Packs for $62.97 — that’s $20 off the regular $82.97 bundle price.
For something you’re going to pull out on the right occasion rather than every round, that’s a pretty compelling value for what you’re getting.
Final Thoughts on Volvik Twilight Golf Balls
The Volvik Vivid Twilight is still a novelty. I’m not going to pretend otherwise. But it’s a novelty that actually works, performs surprisingly well as a golf ball, and opens up experiences that a standard sleeve of Pro V1s simply cannot.

Sometimes the right product isn’t the one you use every day. Sometimes it’s the one that makes a random Tuesday evening in Oregon with your family into something you’ll actually remember.
These did that for me. And I think they might do it for you, too.

Total Gimmick or Totally Awesome? Maybe a little of both.
I was surprised by how much fun I had with these balls. Not only do they perform like real golf balls, but they glow exceptionally well at the same time. It's maybe a little cumbersome to continually need to recharge them, but that's a minor inconvenience. These are fun, and for the Twilight golfer? Genuinely useful.
The Good
- Starter pack makes it easy to get going
- Balls performed better than expected
- Glow very bright and are easy to see at night
The Bad
